The HATWALK Summer School 2009 this year brings a choice of 7 classes for beginners through to experienced milliners. Jane Smith and Ian Bennett are delighted to be back with new courses. We are expanding to include glove making and a class with Dutch designer Eugenie van Oirschot.Â
All courses will take place at Edinburgh’s Telford College, Granton Road, Edinburgh EH5 1QE.

Create a charming vintage hat with Jane Smith      Â

Jane Smith is undoubtedly one of the UK’s most talented and respected theatrical milliner. With Jane you will look at vintage hats for inspiration and go on to create your own bespoke piece.The price of the course includes one felt hood, wire, any buckram and petersham for head fitting. Trimming is not included.
Carve your own hat block with Jane Smith

Jane Smith trained as a sculptress. On this new course you will be show the techniques needed to carve your own unique hat block from polystyrene, saving you money and allowing the only limits to be your imagination.
The price of the course includes enough polystyrene to make one crown and one small brim.
 Design your own Occasion Hat with Ian Bennett

We are delighted to welcome back Ian Bennett to our Summer School. This year he will guide you through the process of making a brimmed hat, from blocking through to trimming. Working in sinamay, in a colour of your choice, you will create a stunning, original hat for that special occasion.
This course includes enough sinamay to make one hat with brim plus wire and petersham. Trimming is not included.

This course is ideal for people who have never made a hat before. Starting with your own design the aim is to create a wearable hat or headpiece using traditional millinery techniques. A great introduction to this wonderful art. Suitable for all ages.Â
Price includes basic materials such as millinery wire, buckram, some sinamay. Trims not included.
Artistic millinery with Eugenie van Oirschot        Â

Eugenie is a Dutch designer and winner of The Hat Magazine “Designer of the Year†2001. On this new course you will translate you own ideas with the professional and artistic guidance of Eugenie. This class is perfect for you if you like to experiment with form and structure.
Basic materials will be provided for this course.
