HATWALK 2008 - HATWALK in Wonderland

After a year off to recover from all the activity of the last 3 years, HATWALK returned in 2008.

Working in partnership with Edinburgh's Telford College we made some changes and added some bits too. Firstly we moved to St Stephen's Church in Stockbridge. The show was based around the theme of Alice in Wonderland, hence HATWALK in Wonderland. Milliners worked on their ideas and created hats based on the story.

The show was compared by a wonderful Mad Hatter, actor Crawford Logon.Performers this year came from Edinburgh's Telford College dance department and a new director, Jennifer Black added a different flavour.

Once again we included a selection of winning hats from our student workshops. The venue provided an ideal space to display the other hats, which were viewed by over 700 people over the 2 days.

We were thrilled when Craig McMurdo, our compare in 2004 agreed to come back and host the charity auction. We decided to support the Teenage Cancer Trust Remember Zoe appeal and were delighted to raise over £5600 for this worthwhile cause.

HATWALK 2006 - The World Tour

HATWALK 2006 was renamed HATWALK, The World Tour. This time we went bigger and bolder. Firstly we became a registered charity. We moved to Mansfield Traquair, a beautiful church in Edinburgh's East End. We wanted to create a story. Thus our star, Josh Tinton went on a tour of the world. Each of the milliners involved created a collection of hats based on a specific country.

Once again we used our dancers to perform but added actors, some professional and some students. We put on 4 performances over 2 days, culminating with a Gala performance on the second night. We had numerous mentions in the press, a spot on local TV news and one of our hats made Picture of the Week in The Times.

We raised money this year for a little known Edinburgh charity called Family Service Unit (Scotland) which then became Family.

Once again we had our school pupils involved. 2006 saw HATWALK working with over 700 pupils over the course of the year. 60 of those children modelled on the catwalk and the winner was taken to London to meet our patron, Phillip Treacy.

HATWALK 2005

HATWALK 2005 built on the success of the first year. We returned to Greyfriars Kirk and followed the same format. This year we added tango dancers along with our performers from Dance for All. We decided to support Macmillan Cancer Relief once more.

The biggest change in 2005 was the introduction of school pupils as part of the show. Felicity Faichney along with other milliners in the show started to run millinery workshops in schools. A decision was taken to chose the best hats to be part of the show, modelled by their creators. The rest of the hats would be on display for the public to see. The professional milliners were also able to sell their work. The show was compared by the talented Fred MacAulay.

HATWALK 2004

The first HATWALK took place in 2004 at Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh. Complementing the annual British Hat Guild "Week of Hats", HATWALK sought to highlight both established and emerging talent within Scottish millinery.

Felicity Faichney, the founder of HATWALK, wanted to create something more theatrical than a straight catwalk show. With that in mind she recruited actor and director Steven Wren as Creative Director. He then roped in his students from Edinburgh dance school, Dance for All to perform. Thus HATWALK was borne. It was a huge success and raised much needed funds for Macmillan Cancer Relief. None of this would have been possible without a huge amount of support from all the volunteers.
